Welcome from Conference Chairs
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Shanghai for the 29th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2010). For the first time ever in its history the OMAE conference is being held in China.
The objective of this annual international event is threefold:
- to provide a forum for the industrial communities and academic circles from around the world to present advances in technology and its scientific support
- to exchange ideas and experiences whilst promoting technological progress and its application in industry
- to promote international cooperation in ocean, offshore and arctic engineering.
In this conference almost 660 technical papers are planned for presentation organized into eight regular Symposia and will be complemented by two special symposia, the T. Francis Ogilvie Symposium on Marine Hydrodynamics and Fluid Mechanics and the Alaa E. Mansour Symposium on Ship and Offshore Structural Design. In addition to those we have one special symposia on Offshore Geotechnics. It is our belief that you will benefit from the academic and technical exchange and discussions held during the Conference.
OMAE 2010 is organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and the Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OOAE) Division of the International Petroleum Technology Institute (IPTI) with co-sponsorships by various International Engineering Societies and Organizations. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the Conference Co-Sponsors whose generous contributions made it possible for the success of this Conference. We also want to express our appreciation to the corporate sponsors, corporate supporters, media sponsors and a group of dedicated individuals for their support to this event.
Shanghai is the largest and most highly advanced city in China. This year Expo 2010 will be held in Shanghai from May 1 to October 31, the largest event held in China since the 2008 Summer Olympics. With about 200 nations and international organizations taking part in the exhibition, as well as 70 million visitors from home and abroad, Expo 2010 Shanghai will be a memorable reunion of people from all over the world for economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges. We are confident that you will experience this great event and partake in the rejoicing. Expo 2010 will make your participation in OMAE 2010 in Shanghai an unforgettable experience.
In conclusion, we hope you enjoy both the technical presentations, discussions and social programs during OMAE 2010 in the wonderful and exciting city of Shanghai.

Welcome from Technical Program Chair
As the OMAE 2010 Technical Program Chair, I am honored to present you with the exciting Technical Program for OMAE 2010, the 29th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering! Hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, not only is it the first OMAE conference held in Asia since 1997, it will also be the first time an OMAE conference has been convened in China.
The industry has recognized this opportunity and OMAE 2010 has over twenty companies signed up in support of the conference. OMAE 2010 will showcase the exciting and challenging developments occurring in the industry today. Following the tradition of excellence of previous OMAE conferences, we expect about 700 technical papers organized into the following twelve symposia:
- Offshore Technology
- Structures, Safety and Reliability
- Materials Technology
- Pipeline and Riser Technology
- Ocean Space Utilization
- Ocean Engineering
- Polar and Arctic Sciences and Technology
- CFD and VIV
- Ocean Renewable Energy
- Offshore Geotechnics
- T. Francis Ogilvie Symposium: Professor T. Francis Ogilvie’s important accomplishments in the fields of naval hydromechanics, free surface and ocean engineering fluid mechanics will be honored.
- Alaa E. Mansour Symposium: Professor Alaa E. Mansour’s significant contribution to the fields of ship and offshore structural design will be honored.
Some of the technical program highlights include the following:
- Material Technology Symposium: feature presentations on Advanced Materials for Arctic Pipelines, and a workshop on Strain Capacity of Pipelines within the Material Technology Symposium.
- Pipeline & Riser Technology Symposium: 120 presentations covering different aspects of rigid and flexible pipe design, as well as new innovative techniques for installation and inspection. The growing interest in the pipe-soil interaction will be covered in six dedicated sessions.
- Ocean Space Utilization Symposium: One of the OSU Symposium topics will be Deep-sea mining, which is attracting attention given the recent rise in the price of metals. Development concepts, system design, economical feasibility, environmental impact and assessment will be presented in the Deep-sea Mining sessions of the OSU Symposium.
Back by popular demand, ASME-IPTI is offering the four special Short Courses, taught by world-renowned experts. We hope you were able to take advantage of this opportunity.
Participating in OMAE 2010 is a great opportunity for you and your family to visit Shanghai and China. Enjoy the sightseeing tours, technical visits, accompanying persons programs, and other networking events.
Last but not least, I would like to thank all of the authors, symposia coordinators and session organizers who contribute to the success of the Technical Program. We hope you all enjoy the technical program through its paper presentations and technical discussions. Again, welcome to OMAE 2010.

Welcome from the OOAE Division
The Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OOAE) Division of ASME is concerned with a wide range of technical competencies, including environmental loading, hydrodynamic behavior, materials selection, structural strength, and safety.
Historically, there has been an emphasis on ships, floating units and subsea equipment associated with the oil and gas industry. Recently, ocean renewable energies, such as those from waves, tides, currents and offshore wind, have provided new areas of substantial interest.
The main activity of the OOAE is the annual International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE). The OMAE Conference is widely recognized as the primary international forum for technical exchanges in the above-mentioned areas. Academia, industry and regulatory institutions are well represented. Participation is historically very international, with attendees coming from approximately 40 different countries.
On behalf of the OOAE Division of ASME, I would like to welcome you to OMAE 2010, in the international city of Shanghai. The conference promises to be an excellent opportunity to maintain knowledge of state-of-the-art advancements in ocean, offshore and arctic engineering. This year’s conference has 12 technical symposia. We have nine regular symposia: Offshore Technology, Structures, Safety & Reliability, Materials, Pipeline & Riser, Ocean Space Utilization, Ocean Engineering, Polar & Arctic Sciences and Technology, CFD & VIV, and Ocean Renewable Energy. For the second year, we have a special symposium on Offshore Geotechnics, which we hope will continue to grow. Also this year we have symposia honoring two special colleagues, T. Francis Ogilvie and Alaa E. Mansour, for their contributions to the field. There are also four pre-conference workshops, a new record.
I would like to express the Division’s thanks to the Conference Chairs, Chen Gang and Yang Jianmin, both of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, for their hard work and dedication in organizing this outstanding conference. Special thanks go to Xiaozhi (Christina) Wang, the Technical Program Chair. Thanks also go to the International Advisory Committee, the symposium coordinators, the session organizers, the authors, the reviewers, and the distinguished audience, all of whom make the conference a success.
Welcome once again to Shanghai, and I hope you find your time here professionally rewarding and personally enjoyable.
